Sawyer's Sweet Takes
Oops! I'm 5 Paradigms Deep!
Modern development uses frameworks that are built on top of not one but two or more frameworks. This website is a perfect example. It uses Hextra, which is a flavor Hugo, Tailwind, and NextJS. Tailwind and Next are flavors of CSS and React (a flavor of Javascript.) Hugo itself is a flavor of Go. The specific file for this blog post is in Markdown, which is interpreted by a Goldmark flavor of markdown, read by Go and assembled with many other disparate files to create this single page.
Fast Deployments at Blade UI High
My current obsession is tech stacks that are easy to setup prototype and deploy. Most projects never become enormous and there’s almost no reason for any developer to be maintaining enterprise level code on a small scale. The main reason for this is unless the enterprise toolkit is low cost and default within the framework (such as django,) you have to spend a significant amount of time working with new paradigms and building features into your software that may never get used.
Balatro Capital - Growth is for dummies
Outline: Will fill out later I am a big time math and comp sci person with a penchant for hard games about growth and scaling systems (Power Grid, Slay the Spire, Balatro). In these games you have short and long term limitations. If there is a short term limitation, you need to solve for it immediately or you will not move forward. You have to spend all necessary resources to solve for the short term.
Living On the Edge... of Project Management.
The best insight I got on PM came from an industry professional. He said “I can trust every team in the company to build a good solution. I can trust them to build it in a reasonable time. The real issue is bringing 6 perfect solutions from 6 different teams together and getting them all to work. You’re dealing with fog of war as a project gets closer and closer to completion.
Making Art Without Social Media
Social Media is all the rage these days. That’s a pun based on thefact that social media companies weaponize rage against users to keep them engaged so they stay on the platforms longer and share more content. I was watcing a video yesterday about how to instantly scale your art business without getting a million followers tomorrow. And what I do now since most of the content on youtube is complete shit is I just read the transcript.
No Plan B
Your plan B can fail. Plan C, D, all can fail. The biggest problem with plans is: You have to execute them. You have limited energy and more importantly, limited attention. The easiest way to make money is to get a job. It is because someone has already figured out the things you need to do every day in order to take home a paycheck. If you have never figured out a path to income outside of getting a job, it’s incredibly difficult.
What Annie Duke and Nate Silver forget about betting
A good bet is quantifiable. With poker you mix three different, measurable things together, 1) the chance my hand will improve based on the next card 2) The chance an opponent has a better hand 3) the amount of money I have to pay into the pot to see that bet through. I’m no expert on poker but here’s a quick scenario. Say there’s a 25% chance by hand will be a really good on the next card.
